Lightweight boxer, Amy Broadhurst settles for bronze at the Women's European Boxing Championships (EUBC) semi-final in Madrid on the 30th of August.

Amy was against Olympic medalist Mira Potkonen a Finnish lightweight boxer and suffered a 5-0 loss.

World number one, Mira Potkonen, has previously beaten boxing superstar, Katie Taylor, at the Rio Olympics in 2016 bringing the Irish boxer's fairytale journey to an end.

In the quarter-finals of the EUBC, Broadhurst's won against 2014 elite world champion Beliakova, giving the European under 22 champion her first Elite Senior International medal.

Amy nearly missed the opportunity to compete in the European Championship but, Kellie Harrington's injury meant the 22-year-old was called up to fight.

Her medal win comes a year after her controversial game at the AIBA World Women's Elite Championships in India. At the competition, she missed out on a bronze medal after a split decision from the judges left her devastated.

Amy's Irish teammate Aoife O'Rourke picked up the gold medal at the EUBC 75kg final, beating Elziebta Wojcik.

This has given Aoife O'Rourke a chance of qualifying in Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The president of Ireland Michael D Higgins posted: “My heartfelt congratulations to Aoife O’Rourke on winning gold, and to Amy Broadhurst on winning the bronze medal, at the European Elite Women’s Boxing Championships in Madrid.”

The Irish boxing team will be in October's Women's World Championships in Ulan Ude, Russia starting on the 3rd.
