For the typical boxing fan, it can be considered an incredibly strange period for the sport.

As of yesterday, it was announced that YouTube juggernauts KSI and Logan Paul will be taking part in their first professional fight to settle an online feud - with the event being promoted by Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Sport.

The announcement has been met with mixed praise and criticism from fans of YouTube and boxing alike, however, this has undoutedbly sparked the age of a new dawn when it comes to sporting entertainment.

Nevertheless, it appears that former Manchester United and England captain Wayne Rooney is prepared to enter the ring, upon a charity basis.

Discussing the upcoming YouTuber bout on Jim White's talkSPORT show, Eddie Hearn revealed who else is eager to throw on the gloves.

"People like Wayne Rooney.

“I’ve got a podcast, he was on there recently, he loves it. He’s been boxing in amateur clubs.

“Wayne would love to do a charity fight. All these guys, they love boxing.”

At the age of 33, Rooney is nearing the end of his professional career within the world of football and may find himself accustom to new experiences and opportunities.

Rooney, who is soon to move back across the Atlantic to join Derby County, has reportedly demonstrated a keen interest in boxing.

Although we're not expecting the Liverpudlian to aim for any titles, it could be an interesting dynamic to see the bullish striker enter the boxing ring as a form of entertainment.

In addition to this, Rooney could certainly use this opportunity to silence the critics following the infamous knockout video at the hands of Phil Bardsley.

A brutal left-hand from the, now, Burnley defender saw Rooney hit the deck in a video which went viral. Coincidentally, Rooney demonstrated his light-hearted nature as he re-enacted this video with a goal-scoring celebration against Tottenham, just days after the video had surfaced in the media.
