Ranking the top 20 signings made in Europe's top five leagues this summer

The summer transfer window is finally closed for all clubs across Europe.

Once again, teams across the continent splashed an absurd amount of money, with over £5bn spent in the top five leagues.

Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid were the three top spenders, with Manchester City leading the way for Premier League clubs.

So now that all is said and done in another pulsating summer transfer window, it’s time to look back at the best purchases made,

Below, we’ve provided – in order – our opinion on the 20 best signings in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga in 2019.

20 – NABIL FEKIR (Real Betis)

Arguably the bargain of the summer. Real Betis acquired a world-class talent for less than £30m and Fekir is still just 26.

19 – MATS HUMMELS (Borussia Dortmund)

Borussia Dortmund needed a leader and they got one. The experience and defensive nous Hummels will bring to Lucien Favre’s young side will be invaluable.

18 – JULIAN BRANDT (Borussia Dortmund)

Dortmund’s marquee signing of the summer, beating rivals Bayern Munich to the signing of one of Germany’s most exciting young talents.

Versatile, talented, playing in his peak years and cost just £25m. What’s not to like about PSG’s new attacking midfielder?

16 – YOURI TIELEMANS (Leicester)

Courted by Europe’s elite, but Leicester got the deal over the line for a cool £40m. They now have one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League on their books.

15 – AARON RAMSEY (Juventus)

Another transfer window, another stellar free transfer. Ramsey linking up with Cristiano Ronaldo and Gonzalo Higuain under Maurizio Sarri is the stuff of dreams.

14 – LUCAS HERNANDEZ (Bayern Munich)

With Hummels leaving and Jerome Boateng not the player he was, Bayern took the youthful route to bolster their defence. Hernandez is already one of the best around and can deputise at left-back.

13 – HIRVING LOZANO (Napoli)

Napoli love a flying winger and Lozano is one of the most exciting around. It’s hard to envisage the Mexican not succeed in Naples.

Icardi left Inter Milan rather acrimoniously, but PSG arguably have the most clinical finisher in the world on their books to boost their Champions League hopes.

West Ham have needed a top striker for years and they now have one of Europe’s best. Luka Jovic grabbed the headlines at Eintracht Frankfurt, but Haller was the key man.

10 – NICOLAS PEPE (Arsenal)

For too long now, Arsenal have lacked a tricky winger capable of skinning opposing full-backs. In £72m man Pepe, they have the perfect man to fill that gaping hole.

United were crying out for a disciplined yet exciting right-back and Wan-Bissaka looks set to be just that for years to come.

8 – ROMELU LUKAKU (Inter Milan)

Don’t be fooled by the criticism at United, Lukaku is a world-class goal scorer. Under Antonio Conte, he will be a force to be reckoned with in Italian football.

7 – FRENKIE DE JONG (Barcelona)

A much-needed heir to Sergio Busquets’ throne and more than worth £65m.

6 – EDEN HAZARD (Real Madrid)

A true ‘Galactico’ signing. If any player in world football is capable of getting anywhere close to Ronaldo’s brilliance in the Spanish capital, it’s Hazard.

Lionel Messi will no longer be solely relying on Luis Suarez for attacking support in 2019/20 thanks to Griezmann’s arrival this summer.

Maguire may have cost an arm and a leg, but the impact he will have over United’s defence in the coming years is worth every penny of that £80m+ transfer fee.

3 – MATTHIJS DE LIGT (Juventus)

When your best centre-back (Giorgio Chiellini) is approaching his twilight years, what’s the best course of action? Easy, sign the best young defender in world football.

 (Man City)

Has there ever been a midfielder more perfect for Pep Guardiola’s stye of play? City finally have their very own Busquets.

1 – JOAO FELIX (Atletico Madrid)

He may have cost €126m, but Atletico have the perfect replacement for Griezmann and the future of world football.
