In their pursuit of a first-class defensive midfielder Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Real Madrid's Fernando Gago reports

The 24-year-old Argentinian international has been plagued by injury this season which has seen him slip down the pecking order at the Bernabeau behind the likes of Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira.

The recurring knee injury has meant Gago has not yet featured for Madrid in this year’s Champions League and therefore would be eligible to turn out for Spurs – something that is seen as a massive plus for Harry Redknapp.

Tottenham face a tantalising tie with AC Milan in the last 16 of this year’s Champions League, and Redknapp is hoping to add a little more pedigree and experience to an already buoyant squad who have so far excelled in their debut season amongst Europe’s elite.

The highlight of the season so far came in the sensational San Siro tie v Inter Milan, where Spurs lost an epic tie 4-3 with Gareth Bale the hat-trick hero despite ending the game on the losing team.

In the return fixture, Spurs defeated the Champions League holders at White Hart Lane 3-1 showing that they have the ability to beat anybody on their day.

And with the addition of Gago to compliment an already excellent midfield, Tottenham fans’ initial far-fetched Champions League dreams could be a lot closer to reality.
