Bendtner-mania is well and truly alive in Copenhagen. The city has gone crazy for Nicklas Bendtner’s arrival at the club, with his shirt selling out in the club shop.“It’s gone wild,” the club’s manager Stale Solbakken told VG. “I don’t think the marketing department has ever experienced anything like it. It is quite surreal.“I think you have to go back to Preben Elkjær in the 80s to find someone with the same cult-hero status.”The former Arsenal striker, who hasn’t played since April 28, has started training and is expected to make his first appearance for the reserves against FC Copenhagen’s arch-rivals against Brondby on Tuesday.

But the match will be played behind closed doors in part due to the level of interest that Bendtner’s signing has caused.

That, as well as the fact that they are playing Brondby, has caused FCK to play the game without fans.

“This game is against Brondby and then it’s war,” Solbakken added. “It’s just not possible. We have to close it [for fans].

“There would have been supporters from both sets of teams, meaning 3-4,000 fans for a reserve game. We can’t house them there. Our training ground would have blown up.”

Video footage of Bendtner training with his new club went viral this week - mainly for how terrible the 31-year-old looked.

Bendtner will be keen to get going following a turbulent few months.

He was convicted of assaulting a taxi driver and sentenced to 50 days in jail in November 2018, which he served at his home in Denmark with an electronic tag.

His club at the time, Rosenborg, released him on transfer deadline day, with reports suggesting that they paid Bendtner off.
