Bianca Andreescu: First Canadian women to reach the US Open final

19-year-old Bianca Andreescu defeated Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world-ranked number No.12 Belinda Bencic in the US Open semi-finals on 5th September 2019.

Andreescu's 7-6 7-5 win takes the young tennis star into the US Open final where she will be playing against Serena Williams.

Bencic started the game strongly but Bianca caught up winning the last five games. She says the game “wasn’t easy at all.”

“She hits the ball really hard and really flat I think every shot. My knees were to the ground. It wasn’t too fun playing her. That’s what makes her such a great player.

“The main reason I won today I think is because I just kept fighting. I never let up.”

Bianca has had a successful year winning her first WTA 125K title at Newport Beach in January, taking two Premier titles and now reaching the US Open Final.

The pair have played together in the Rogers Cup final but that was cut short due to Serena Williams being forced to retire because of back spasms.

As Andreescu prepares to play she says: “I’ve always dreamt of this moment ever since I was a little kid."

The US Open Final will take place on 7th Septemeber at 9pm GMT.
