World-class athletes from across the globe will take to the streets this weekend hoping to impress the thousands of spectators itching to witness records tumble at the Great North City Games.

Stockton will host the GNCG tomorrow, as the high street transforms into a venue for the sporting spectacle with athletics fans gaining a close-up experience of the elite performances.

Headline acts to shine

All eyes will be on Allyson Felix as she lines up for a thrilling 150m race. She will face intense competition from US teammate Deajah Stevens and Brits, Beth Dobbin and Ashleigh Nelson. After taking time off the sport to give birth, Felix continues to build on her impressive form which will see her back to her very best in seasons to come.

In the long jump, Abigail Irozuru will be aiming to secure the win after a stunning personal best jump at the British Championships last month. Irozuru will be tested by the elite field including the reigning Olympic Champion Tianna Bartoletta to make for an exciting head to head.

Athletes competing on the road

Unlike previous years, spectators will see athletes compete in a 400m road race rather than the usual 500m. In this event, the dutch duo Lisanne and Laura De Witte will take to the start line amongst a loaded field including five British athletes. Lina Nielsen also starts, without twin sister Laviai Nielsen leaving the sibling rivalry to the dutch duo.

Eilish McColgan features in the mile, facing strong British distance athletes including Melissa Courtney. She will be hoping to display her superb form this season in preparation for the World Championships in Doha.

The Great North Run follows on 8th September with Kenya’s Mary Keitany looking to take a fourth title at this event.
