UFC fans panicked when Khabib Nurmagomedov jumped over Octagon after win v Dustin Poirier

UFC 242 Khabib v Poirier

In the end, Khabib Nurmagomedov made light work of Dustin Poirier at UFC 242.

The 30-year-old, taking part in his first fight since his infamous victory over Conor McGregor in October 2018, secured the 28th victory of his professional career in Abu Dhabi.

Khabib successfully defended and unified the UFC Lightweight Championship to further cement his status as the best MMA fighter in the world right now.

The Russian submitted Poirier in the third round, securing a rear naked choke on the American after outwrestling his opponent during the first two rounds.

Piorier came into the fight as the underdog but was still a dangerous opponent for Khabib, having secured victories over Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez, Justin Gaethje and Anthony Pettis in his last four fights.

Khabib, however, proved that he’s on another level right now.

Slapped with a nine-month suspension for his part in the UFC 229 aftermath, the Dagestani-born fighter was on his best behaviour for UFC 242.

But there was one moment, shortly after his victory, where UFC fans held their breath.

Khabib jumped out of the Octagon again - like he did after UFC 229 - although this time he refrained from attacking a member of the crowd.

However, there was one split-second where it looked like Khabib may have been about to throw off a few punches again. Surely he wouldn’t be mad enough to make the same mistake again, would he?

No - of course not.

This time he hugged UFC president Dana White.

Now that’s more like it, Khabib.

His decision to jump out of the Octagon again, though, led to some very funny tweets.

Here’s a selection of the best…
