Montpellier have confirmed the signing of John Utaka from Portsmouth.

The Nigeria striker returns to Ligue 1, where he previously had spells with Lens and Rennes, scoring 22 goals in 63 games for the latter.

However, he struggled on the English south coast, managing only seven goals - three of them this campaign - in three turbulent seasons.

In that time Portsmouth went to the brink of extinction fighting extreme financial difficulties, while also being relegated into the npower Championship.

Utaka has signed a two-and-a-half year deal with Montpellier, who sit seventh in Ligue 1 despite having only managed 17 goals in 20 games this season.

He could make his debut in next weekend's game against St Etienne.
