England's attack was on fire against Kosovo. The less said about what happened at the other end of the pitch, the better. The international minnows took a shock lead inside 34 seconds through Valon Berisha, courtesy of Michael Keane's error. For a moment, it looked as though an upset might be on the cards, particularly with Kosovo arriving at St Mary's on a string of 15 games unbeaten. Normal service was quickly resumed, however, with the Three Lions scoring five before the interval.

Raheem Sterling equalised before Harry Kane put Gareth Southgate's men in front.

Jadon Sancho's cross was then turned in by Mergim Vojvoda and the Borussia Dortmund star then scored two goals of his own, both assisted by Sterling.

'Are you Scotland in disguise?' sang the home fans, with little thought as to some of the embarrassing defending that would follow in the second half.

Southgate will be encouraged nonetheless by his forwards, particularly Sterling who spoke after the game about trying to reach the levels of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

“As I said you look at these players the most remarkable thing about them is that they do it not just for two or three seasons, but through their whole career, season after season," he told reporters.

"This is my first at a high level and I have just got to continue.

"Keep trying and learning and trying to get to the top."

Over the past couple of seasons, Sterling has won over a lot of people both with his performances on the pitch and his actions off it.

That was the case again as he made time for a young England fan by not only giving him his autograph, but taking his boots off and handing them over too - presumably before walking back to the dressing room in just his socks.

The 24-year-old has two goals in as many games for his country.

While there's certainly an argument to be had that England's group is just that bit too easy and that it won't necessarily help them in the European Championships next year, the Manchester City forward has also made an impeccable start to the new Premier League season with five goals in four matches.

It looks set to be another campaign of reaching new heights for Sterling.
