It's that time of year again.

The release of FIFA 20 is not far away and individual player ratings are already causing quite a stir.

Lionel Messi will no doubt be delighted with once again being recognised as the best player in the world, predictably eclipsing Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, others are not so content.

Eric Dier and Gabriel Jesus both had the misfortune of finding out their respective ratings in promotional videos.

Dier got a card of 79, while the Manchester City striker is ranked at just 82.

A lot of calculation and number-crunching goes on behind the scenes at EA headquarters to ensure players' ratings are as accurate as possible.

By and large, they do a very good job - but there are always some that are bound to ignite debate.

So, here at GiveMeSport, we've decided to pick out just a few of the most underrated and overrated picks from this year's game.

UNDERRATED

Jadon Sancho - 84

When Borussia Dortmund sell the England international, he's expected to go for in excess of £100million. The former Man City attacker is also now shining for his country, scoring his first two goals against Kosovo.

Kylian Mbappe - 89

Mbappe has only gone up +1 since last year, despite shouldering PSG's hopes in Neymar's absence. In the 2018/19 campaign, he scored 33 league goals and deserves to have made it into the 90s.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 79

Manchester United equalled the record fee for a right-back to procure him from Crystal Palace and he should at least be in the 80s. Wan-Bissaka was superb at Selhurst Park but there was a feeling he didn't get the recognition he deserved - including from Gareth Southgate - until he moved to a top-six club.

Richarlison - 79

The Everton forward has been establishing himself with the Brazilian national side. Yes, he can be hit and miss (remember how he tailed off at Watford). With the Toffees, he picked up again and has two goals in four games this season.

Raheem Sterling - 88

Not a bad rating, by any means, but Sterling is in the top handful of attacking players in the world, a key reason why City have won back-to-back titles.

Joao Felix - 80

Admittedly, it was a big surprise when Atletico Madrid paid €126 million for him when he'd only played one full season for Benfica. What a season it was, though, with 15 goals in 21 league starts.

OVERRATED

Thomas Muller - 86

Joachim Low seems to think Muller is finished at the very top and we're inclined to agree. After the James Rodriguez loan, Bayern's latest signing of Philippe Coutinho is yet another sign that they are gradually phasing Muller out as he has underwhelmed in the Bundesliga for the last couple of seasons.

Paulo Dybala - 88

It isn't necessarily the Argentine's fault that he was a little underwhelming last season. The presence of a certain Portuguese arrival meant Dybala's role changed, and he hasn't exactly been treated brilliantly by Juventus either as they tried to oust him in the summer. Even so, he is no longer looking like the future Ballon d'Or winner he once was.

Jesse Lingard - 82

The Manchester United playmaker hasn't recorded a goal or assist in 2019. His rating isn't all *that* high, but even in the Red Devils' squad, he's surpassed Harry Maguire and is just +1 below Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. Really?

Luka Modric - 90

Hear us out, here. Modric won the 2018 Ballon d'Or after helping Croatia to the World Cup final, but in the season that followed with Real Madrid, he was poor. Even his admirers fear he is no longer making midfields tick like he used to.

David de Gea - 89

If there was a rating for being beaten at the near post, De Gea would be in the 90s. Joking aside, the goalkeeper's decline has been alarming. Mark Schwarzer claimed this week that De Gea had been "average" for at least six months. Until he reverses his form, he ought to be mid-80s at best.
