In his pomp, Michael Carrick was one of the coolest customers around. The no-frills midfielder formed the backbone of many a Sir Alex Ferguson midfield and was often the glue that held that famous Red Devils team together. He made 464 appearances for the Manchester giants, winning ten major titles - including the Premier League on five separate occasions. While he may have never been a headline grabber, Carrick made sure that the job got done time and time again and his contributions to United should never be undersold.Carrick hung up his boots in 2018 and took up a role amongst the clubs coaching staff and it is fair to say his on-field efforts have been missed.

United have been crying out for a holding midfielder of his ilk ever since.

While Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay have been decent on occasion, they have never quite filled the massive hole left behind by Carrick.

Carrick runs the show at Kompany’s testimonial

Now, United fans are calling for Carrick to be coaxed out of retirement after he put in a fantastic shift at Vincent Kompany’s testimonial on Wednesday night.

The 38-year-old absolutely bossed it all night long, leading many a Red Devil fan to declare that he is far better than any of their current crop.

They make a good point.

United have really laboured in the midfield area of late, struggling to find a settled and effective combination in the engine room.

Paul Pogba is simply too inconsistent, while McTominay is still a raw talent.

The aforementioned Matic is in decline while the likes of Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard simply can’t cut the mustard at the moment.

Oh how they could use someone like Carrick.

If someone could pass Carrick’s number along to Ole that would be great - they need to have a serious chat.
