Virgil van Dijk becomes first defender ever to reach a market value of €100m

Virgil van Dijk is setting record after record at Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk is now considered by the vast majority to be the best defender in the world.

The Dutch centre-back has transformed Liverpool's defence since signing in January 2018.

Many are now questioning whether he's the best defender in Premier League history.

Another challenger for that crown, Vincent Kompany, actually thinks that the Liverpool star is ahead of the rest.

"I never try to compare. My journey is different, I've had to deal with different tools and for me to not play this game, let's not escape the irony," he said, per the Mirror.

"So I've had to deal with that and I've tried to be substantial for my team.

"I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he's not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he's shown in the last few years show if he had been around longer he'd have been at the top for a long time.

"The Liverpool before van Dijk and after are a completely different set up so I'll give him that one."

Van Dijk continues to break record after record and now, according to transfermarkt, he is the first defender in history to have a market value of €100m.
