Virgil van Dijk is now considered by the vast majority to be the best defender in the world.

The Dutch centre-back has transformed Liverpool's defence since signing in January 2018.

Many are now questioning whether he's the best defender in Premier League history.

Another challenger for that crown, Vincent Kompany, actually thinks that the Liverpool star is ahead of the rest.

"I never try to compare. My journey is different, I've had to deal with different tools and for me to not play this game, let's not escape the irony," he said, per the Mirror.

"So I've had to deal with that and I've tried to be substantial for my team.

"I would bring it back to Virgil van Dijk, he's not been on the scene as long as Terry, Ferdinand who have been around for a long time but the signs he's shown in the last few years show if he had been around longer he'd have been at the top for a long time.

"The Liverpool before van Dijk and after are a completely different set up so I'll give him that one."

Van Dijk continues to break record after record and now, according to transfermarkt, he is the first defender in history to have a market value of €100m.

The most valuable defenders in world football at the moment are listed below:

1) Virgil van Dijk - €100m

2) Trent Alexander-Arnold - €80m

3) Matthijs de Ligt - €75m

4) Aymeric Laporte - €75m

5) Kalidou Koulibaly - €75m

6 Lucas Hernández - €70m

7) José Giménez - €70m

8) Harry Maguire - €70m

9) Raphaël Varane - €70m

10) Joshua Kimmich - €70m

11) Marquinhos - €65m

12) Andrew Robertson - €60m

13) Milan Skriniar - €60m

14) John Stones - €60m

15) Clément Lenglet - €60m

16) Niklas Süle - €60m

17 Davinson Sánchez - €55m

18) João Cancelo - €55m

19 David Alaba - €55m

20) Éder Militão - €50m

So Liverpool have the two most valuable defenders in the world, with Trent Alexander-Arnold being valued at €20m less than his teammate.

The Reds also have another player in the top 15, with Andy Robertson's value of €60m making him the 12th most valuable defender in the world.

Elsewhere, Juventus' new wonderkid, Matthijs de Ligt, rounds out the podium places, while Harry Maguire's market value of €70m puts him in eighth.
