Jose Mourinho says Alexis Sanchez struggled at Manchester United because he was a 'sad man'

Jose Mourinho has been out of management for almost 10 months.

He left Manchester United in December 2018 after failing to get the best out his squad.

One of the players who struggled so much under the Special One was Alexis Sanchez.

The Chilean moved to Manchester in January of last year but had what can only really be described as a dreadful spell.

He played 45 games in all competitions, scoring just five goals. For a man that was being paid over £400,000-a-week, that kind of return simply isn't good enough.

Even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer couldn't get anything out of the winger after taking over as manager at Old Trafford.

Sanchez has since moved to Inter Milan on loan and will hope to rediscover his form in Italy, before returning to England next summer.

But Mourinho believes that he will not ever be able to perform at United because he was a 'sad man' during his first spell at the club.

"Sanchez... I felt him [to be] not a happy man. And I think in every job you have when you are not happy it is not so easy to perform at every level," Mourinho told the Telegraph.

"Maybe I am wrong. Maybe it was me who was not capable to get into him and to get the best out of him.

"As a manager sometimes you have the capacity to get the best out of the players and other times you are not successful in that approach.

"But the reality is that I always felt [of Sanchez], ‘a sad man’. So probably in Italy, he will recover this. I hope he can. I always wish well to every player."

According to Mourinho, Alexis has some serious demons at Man United. It's such a shame to hear of a player who's fallen out of love for the game, especially one who already gave so much to it.

Sanchez's story just goes to prove that money really can't buy happiness.
