Heading into the Premier League season, Norwich were expected to go straight back down to the Championship.Daniel Farke’s side spent next to nothing in the transfer window and many expected them to be cut adrift by Christmas.Certainly nobody expected them to take the scalp of Manchester City on Saturday evening.Norwich went into the clash against the champions without 11 first-team players. But they, rather incredibly, inflicted defeat on Pep Guardiola’s side by running out 3-2 winners at Carrow Road - City’s first defeat in the Premier League since January.

What makes the result even more incredible was the fact that Norwich’s starting XI cost just £6.45 million.

Alexander Tettey, Emiliano Buendia and Marco Stiepermann all shared the title of being Norwich’s most expensive player in their starting line-up by costing a mere £1.5 million each.

Now let’s compare that to Man City’s starting XI.

Kevin de Bruyne was left on the bench but that didn’t stop their starting line-up costing an eye-watering £406.1 million.

Every single player cost at least £20 million apart from Oleksandr Zinchenko, who cost just £3.4 million.

Eleven players costing £6.45 million beat 11 players costing £406.1 million.

Incredible.

City’s defeat leaves them five points behind Liverpool after just five matches and Guardiola joked that Liverpool are already champions in September.

"Five points is five points - but we are in September," Guardiola said. "What are we supposed to do? Say 'it's September and congratulations to Liverpool, you champions?'"

City will need to regroup for their trip to Ukraine in midweek where they face Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League before returning to Premier League action to host Watford.
