Champions League gameweek 1 preview: Four mouthwatering ties as European football returns

Liverpool v Chelsea: UEFA Super Cup

Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are about to get a whole lot better...well, unless you support Arsenal and Manchester United that is.

The Champions League returns this week, and after the draw gave us some tasty looking groups, it's no surprise that there are some mouthwatering ties to come.

Liverpool will be looking to retain their crown after they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final last season, whilst giants like Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid will all be looking to prove their dominance.

Here is our preview for this week's games, and a few little suggestions courtesy of GIVEMEBET.

TUESDAY

Napoli vs Liverpool - GROUP E

Liverpool have a tricky trip to Italy to kickstart their 2019/2020 Champions League campaign, a place where they've struggled recently.

Napoli beat Jurgen Klopp's men 1-0 at home last season in the group stages, a result they'd certainly take this year as well.

GMB odds - Napoli to win 1-0 12/1

Salzburg vs Genk - GROUP E

Most people will say this is the battle for third place, with Napoli and Liverpool looking strong to cement the top two spots.

If that is the case, winning your home games will be crucial, and that's something Salzburg will be wanting to do in gameweek one.

GMB odds - Salzburg to win 20/29

Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona - GROUP F

FC Barcelona v Arsenal - Pre-Season Friendly

The Group of Death!

Dortmund, Barcelona and Inter Milan all in the same group means there will be plenty of enticing contests over the coming months, and none more so than this one in Germany.

GMB odds - Over 4.5 goals 3/1

Inter Milan vs Slavia Prague - GROUP F

Officials of Slavia Prague went viral during the group stage draw because of their reaction to being dumped in this group, and you just have to feel sorry for them.

Zero points is a real possibility.

GMB odds - Inter to win to zero 21/20

Lyon vs Zenit St. Petersburg - GROUP G

In what is probably the weakest of all the Champions League groups, both teams will fancy their chances of qualifying to the knockout stages.

FBL-FRA-LIGUE1-LYON-BORDEAUX

Lyon will want to make the most of home advantage, and will be fancied by most to pick up the three points.

GMB odds - Lyon to win 5/7

Benfica vs Leipzig - GROUP G

Maybe not the biggest names in the Champions League, but it should be a cracking spectacle to watch, with both sides capable of playing attractive, attacking football.

Goals galore in Portugal?

GMB odds - Over 4.5 goals 9/2

Ajax vs Lille - GROUP H

Last year's darlings of the Champions League Ajax will look to go one further this time around and book a spot in the final.

However, their team from last season has been ripped apart with a few key players leaving, so repeating their feats will be a tough, tough ask.

Chelsea vs Valencia - GROUP H

After winning the Europa League last season, Chelsea are back in the premier European competition, and Frank Lampard will be hoping he can get off to a good start at Stamford Bridge against Valencia.

The Spanish side have just sacked their manager, so it's tricky to predict what to expect from them.

GMB odds - Chelsea to win & BTTS 59/20

WEDNESDAY

Paris Saint-Germain vs Real Madrid - GROUP A

If Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona was the eye-catching game from Tuesday night, then this is certainly the one for Wednesday night.

Two European giants that will be dreaming of lifting the trophy come the end of the season, and what a tie to kickstart their campaigns.

GMB odds - PSG to win & BTTS 12/5

Club Brugge vs Galatasaray - GROUP A

Certainly a game which will be the battle for third place, and it's a tie where anything could happen.

Galatasaray will be a tricky place to go to due to their hostile atmosphere, but it will be interesting to see how they can cope on the road.

GMB odds - Club Brugge to win 1/1

Bayern Munich vs Red Star Belgrade - GROUP B

Bayern Munich will be another one of the teams hoping to go all the way this season, and they should have no problems starting with three points at home to Red Star.

GMB odds - Bayern Munich to win 3-0 11/2

Olympiacos vs Tottenham - GROUP B

Last year's beaten finalists travel to Greece for their opener this season, and although it could be a hostile night for Mauricio Pochettino's men, you'd expect them to pass the test.

Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool - UEFA Champions League Final

GMB odds - Spurs to win 10/11

Shakhtar Donetsk vs Manchester City - GROUP C

A lot was made of Manchester City's seemingly easy draw on paper, and no one will be happier than Pep Guardiola.

It wouldn't come as a surprise if they were already through as group winners after four games, and then chose to play some fringe players in the final two games.

GMB odds - Man City to win 3-0 35/4

Dinamo Zagreb vs Atalanta - GROUP C

With Manchester City seemingly nailed on for top spot, the battle for second place will certainly be a close call.

Shakhtar have the experience in the Champions League, but it would be foolish to rule out either one of these two sides, who will be wanting to start the campaign in a positive manner.

GMB odds - draw 47/20

Atletico Madrid vs Juventus - GROUP D

Another tasty, tasty affair for gameweek one sees the battle of the defences as Atletico Madrid host Juventus.

Juventus v SSC Napoli - Serie A

Two sides that are known for being strong at the back surely means goals will be few and far between? Or will a battle between Joao Felix and Cristiano Ronaldo take centre stage?

GMB odds - 0-0 11/2

Bayer Leverkusen vs Lokomotiv Moscow - GROUP D

Another game where the two teams will probably be battling it out for third spot, both sides will need to be strong at home if they stand any chance of having European football in the new year.

GMB odds - Leverkusen to win to zero 11/10
