The Premier League has seen some incredible players down the years.

When naming the greatest player the league has ever seen, the answer will vary depending on who you’re asking.

Steven Gerrard? Paul Scholes? Cristiano Ronaldo? Thierry Henry?

A player that is often overlooked is a certain Yaya Toure.

The Ivorian played for Manchester City for eight seasons, helping them win three Premier League titles.

Every football fan knows he was good.

But many probably don’t realise just how good he really was - particularly during the 2013/14 campaign.

Let’s take a look at his stats during City’s title-winning campaign.

The midfielder scored an incredible 20 goals from 35 appearances,

Even more incredible was the fact he scored 10 set-pieces from 13 attempts. (Six penalties and four free-kicks).

Add to that his 40 chances created, his nine assists and a passing accuracy of 90%.

Astonishing.

City ended up winning the league ahead of Liverpool by just two points and Toure played an instrumental role in that.

While we don’t think Yaya got enough praise for his performance during that campaign, Toure himself felt the same.

During the end of that season, he believed he wasn’t getting the credit he deserved because he’s from Africa.

Samir Nasri had said that Toure would be celebrated as one of the world’s best midfielders were he not African - a claim that Toure agreed with.

"I think what Samir was saying was definitely true," he said.

"I don't want to be hard and I don't want to be negative, but I want to be honest.

"If we play well and we don't have the recognition from the media, we are not going to be where we want to be.

"If you go to any part of Africa now, people will say, 'yes, we know him [Messi]', but when you come to Europe and say 'Yaya Toure' people will say, 'who is that?' Some will say they know my name but not know my face. But they will know Messi's face."
