The odds of being struck by lightning range from country to country. In the US, the odds of becoming a lightning victim in any one year is one in 700,000. In the UK, it’s more than one in a million. The odds of being struck in Jamaica are presumably lower because a football match in the Caribbean country was called off on Monday when a bolt of lightning left players hospitalised.Remarkable footage of the incident has been posted on social media. It shows a couple of flashes before two players go to ground simultaneously while holding the front of their faces.

A loud rumble of thunder can be heard moments later before everyone rushes to the injured players.

The incident happened during an ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup fixture between Wolmer's Boys' School and Jamaica College (JC) at the Stadium East field.

Wolmer's were 2-1 up at the time, with only five minutes of the match remaining, but referee Karl Tyrell was left with little choice but to call off the game.

Per Loop Jamaica, Jamaica College player Terrence Francis and Wolmer’s Dwayne Allen were both taken to hospital for observation.

Francis had to be stretchered off the pitch after he failed to respond to treatment on the field of play.

Allen and three of his teammates were affected by the lightning strike, plus another of Francis’ Jamaica College teammates.

Allen and Francis were both taken to the University Hospital in West Indies where they were treated.

Jamaica Gleaner report that one player complained of chest pains. Tests were conducted and an ECG showed irregularities, meaning he was held overnight.

Hopefully all the players affected make full and speedy recoveries.
