Eddie Hearn has never been one to keep his opinions to himself.

Within the last year, the outspoken promoter has called out Andy Ruiz Jr for refusing to fight Anthony Joshua in the UK, and even claimed that boxing would benefit from the introduction of VAR.

And now, Hearn has described Tyson Fury as “very lucky” to avoid a shock defeat against Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin.

The Gypsy King sustained deep cuts around his right eye in the third round which could have called time on the fight, eventually needing 47 stitches to fix.

Fury somehow found the resolve to battle through the pain for nine more rounds, and went on to defeat Wallin via a unanimous points decision.

But nevertheless, Hearn was left unimpressed by Fury’s showing.

He told iFL TV: “[He was] lucky. No [I didn’t watch it]. I was flying back from LA. So, I landed and I put it on Twitter and obviously I was like, ‘woah’.

[Tyson was] very lucky to not have his first L. That cut would have been stopped probably anywhere else in the world and he would have lost the fight.

Hearn held nothing back as he questioned Fury’s motivation for the fight against Wallin, and doubted the Gypsy King’s ability to recover in time for his expected rematch with WBC champion Deontay Wilder in February next year.

“I just think it’s another example maybe of a fighter who’s not motivated – I won’t say not motivated, but I don’t think he really wanted to fight Otto Wallin.

“It’s good, [he’s] making his money, supposed to be an easy fight, but I just think it was a below-par performance. Horrific cut, I don’t know how long he’s out for, guessing until next March, April, something like that.”

Summarising the fight, Hearn concluded: “[Someone] put on a s****y fight, someone underperformed, someone got lucky with a cut, and it ended up being a decent fight.”

For the Gypsy King’s sake, let’s hope that this isn’t how his victory over Otto Wallin will be remembered!
