Former world champion Conor McGregor has sparked rumours that his return to the Octagon could be just around the corner after having a Twitter exchange with Dustin Poirier. McGregor has not fought since he was forced into submission by the current undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. Khabib’s most recent victim, which is Poirier himself, had suggested he was thinking about retirement after his bout with the Russian fighter. However, the American’s tweet has suggested that McGregor could make him push back his plans. “I think me and Conor running it back makes a lot of sense at this point,” tweeted the Diamond.

McGregor played his part in the theatre and replied with: “I fed you to the canvas in 90 seconds bro, you should have spoke my name with a bit more respect in that build up. "McGregor’s not next." Motherfucker, it’s McGregor always! McGregor is the goal! Always! Say that now and I’ll think about it.”

The pair met at UFC 178 in 2014 where the Irishman knocked out Poirier in a fight which he dominated and was awarded performance of the night for.

The Notorious reminded him again with a snap of him gearing up to land a punch which he posted to his social media pages.

Poirier then replied with an eggplant emoji and also added, “run it back tough guy.”

But, since their original fight, Poirier has only lost twice in 12, the most recent of which came against the current champion Khabib.

McGregor tweeted a hint of when he could return by posting "Dublin, December 14"

There is scheduled to be a UFC event on that date which is currently set to held in Las Vegas, but it remains unknown whether the Irishman’s profile could force them into a location change.
