Real Madrid’s 2019/20 Champions League campaign got off to a bad start after they slumped to a 3-0 defeat away at Paris Saint-Germain.

PSG were without their three main forwards - Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani - but it was former Madrid star Angel Di Maria who took the game by the scruff of the neck and earned all three points for the home side at the Parc des Princes.

The Argentina winger, who spent four years with Los Blancos, broke struck twice in the first half to leave Zinedine Zidane’s side with a mountain to climb.

Gareth Bale thought he'd pulled one back with an exquisite effort but VAR disallowed the goal for a handball. Karim Benzema also had a goal ruled out in the second half as PSG held on to their lead.

And Thomas Meunier added gloss to the scoreline for the Parisians with a goal in stoppage time.

Di Maria breaks the deadlock

Di Maria broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, beating Thibaut Courtois at his near post with a poked finish from Bernat’s cross.

It was a soft goal for Courtois to concede and you have to wonder what his former teammate Keylor Navas was thinking at the opposite end of the pitch.

Eden Hazard, making his first start for Real Madrid, and James Rodriguez both went close to equalising shortly afterwards. Bale, meanwhile, hit the top of the net with a free-kick.

Di Maria makes it 2-0

Moments later, Di Maria made it 2-0 with a sweet left-footed strike from 20 yards.

It was a wonderful strike from the Argentina international. Neymar and Mbappe, watching on from the stands, both enjoyed it…

Bale's stunning 'goal' disallowed

There was more drama almost immediately when Bale put the ball past Navas with a stunning effort.

It would have been one of the goals of the season had it been allowed but a VAR review showed a clear handball by the Welshman.

Bale was the biggest threat for Madrid and went close again on the stroke of half-time from the edge of the box.

But despite their attempts at goal, PSG were good value for their 2-0 lead at the break.

PSG add a third before full-time

Di Maria should have had his hat-trick on the hour-mark when he found himself through on goal.

The South American tried to finish with a chip past Courtois but failed to hit the target.

Real Madrid were carved open again second later, with Pablo Sarabia going close.

It could have been 4-0 to PSG after 60 minutes on another night.

Benzema saw a goal disallowed with just over 10 minutes remaining as the game petered out.

Meunier's goal at the death will heap further pressure on Zidane, whose future will inevitably be discussed by the media and fans alike following this eye-catching result.
