Amateur boxer Richard Torrez suffered a devastating knockout loss to pro fighter Bakhodir Jalolov yesterday at the AIBA World Boxing Championships in Russia. The talented young American Torrez had to be stretchered out of the ring and was tended to by numerous medical professionals after Jalolov struck with a brutal left hook at the end of the first round.Uzbekistan’s Jalolov is a rising star in the professional ranks and holds a 6-0 record (6 KOs), which has sparked a debate on wether professional fighters should be allowed to compete at the amateur level.Since the 2016 Rio Olympics, pros have been allowed to enter some of the competitions traditionally belonging solely to amateurs and many have questioned the new regulations regarding the safety of fighters with head guards now also removed.WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman declared the fight was both ‘brutal and criminal,’ however, he was contradicted by those who pointed out that Torrez was far from inexperienced himself.

However, there were a lot of fans who saw the clip, and were left furious that it was allowed to happen.

One fan said: "That is disgusting and a terrible thing. A sad day when the people on top corrupted. Shame on them."

Another simply stated: "That should never have been allowed."

A user by the name 'RaiderRich' raised a good point when he tweeted: "Hard to watch that! A KO like that can have a huge effect on a fighter and his future. Hope @richardtorrez21 can bounce back for it and continue his quest."

Luckily Torrez, has recovered and earlier today sent a message to his fans via Instagram from his hospital bed.

“Y’all probably saw the fight, I got hit with a good shot,” said Torrez.

“I’m here in the hospital right now, all the tests came back perfect, they’re just here making sure I’m 100%.

“I appreciate everyone’s love and concern, back to the drawing board now and I hope the best for my opponent.

Jalolov was defeated at the 2016 Rio Olympics by eventual silver medalist Joe Joyce of Great Britain in the quarter-finals.

The 25-year-old bounced back at the Asian Championships in 2017, taking home the super heavyweight top prize and went on to win his second gold medal in Bangkok earlier this year.
