Martin Odegaard has enjoyed an impressive start to the season with Real Sociedad.

The Norwegian midfielder, on loan at the Basque club from Real Madrid, has scored two goals in four La Liga appearances and produced a standout performance in a 2-0 win against Atletico Madrid last weekend.

If he continues to shine then there’s no doubt he will be back at the Bernabeu next season, fighting for a starting spot.

It came as little surprise to see Odegaard, 20, win Real Sociedad’s Player of the Month award.

But his prize wasn’t a trophy or a bottle of champagne. Instead, he was given a large fish.

Odegaard was presented with his award at a supermarket in Donostia. How bizarre.

And yet it’s just the latest in what seems to be a new trend in sport.

In Russia, ice hockey player Saveli Kononov received an AK-47 assault rifle after winning the Player of the Match award in a game for his side.

“If we play poorly, they will shoot us,” one player joked.

Kononov, a goaltender, had stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced during Izhstal Izhevsk’s win over Chelmet in the second-tier VHL.

And Kononov seemed rather pleased with his prize.

It’s good to see Odegaard playing so well.

He joined Real Madrid as a 16-year-old in January 2015 after Los Blancos beat out competition from Europe’s biggest clubs for his signature.

He made his debut in the final game of the 2014-15 season, replacing Cristiano Ronaldo in the 58th minute of Real’s 7-3 win over Getafe.

Loan moves to Heerenveen and Vitesse followed and we’re now seeing the best of Odegaard at Real Sociedad.

He’ll be hoping to receive more fish this season.
