Liverpool have come agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title in two of the previous six seasons.

They finished as runners-up behind Manchester City last term after registering an incredible 97 points. In pretty much every other season they would have been crowned champions.

Back in 2013/14, meanwhile, the Reds finished two points behind City after capitulating during the final weeks of the campaign.

Steven Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea, who went on to win a now infamous Premier League clash at Anfield 2-0, is often seen as the moment Liverpool lost the title in 2014.

This was followed by the equally unforgettable 3-3 draw away at Crystal Palace - often referred to as ‘Crystanbul’ by rival fans.

Carragher was no longer a Liverpool player at this point. The Anfield legend had retired at the end of the previous campaign and was now working for Sky Sports.

Five years later and Carragher believes that Suarez ultimately cost Liverpool the title that season - not Gerrard.

He pinpoints the Uruguayan’s bite on Branislav Ivanovic - which happened towards the end of the previous campaign - as the reason why City finished above the Reds in 2013/14.

“I think that moment cost Liverpool the league the next season because Luis Suarez was banned for five or six games and he missed the first three games the next season - or the first two,” Carragher told Gary Neville for Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s clash against Chelsea this Sunday.

“Liverpool lost the league on goal difference (it was actually by two points) and Luis Suarez was the best player in the league by a mile, scored almost every game - about 34 goals.

“In the first four games that he missed, I think, Liverpool lost at home to Southampton 1-0 and drew away to Swansea 2-2 or something. So they dropped five points.

“If Luis Suarez was playing in those games they probably win both of them. But let’s be conservative… they probably would beat Southampton at home.

“You don’t realise at the time but looking back now, and the season he had the next season - Player of the Year, Football Writers’ Player of the Year - I believe Liverpool would have got an extra two or three points if he was playing in those games.”

So, there you have it.

Carragher doesn’t believe the moment his old mate Gerrard slipped and gave the ball to Demba Ba cost Liverpool the title.

He thinks of Suarez had kept his cool in April 2013, things would have been very different for the Merseyside outfit 12 months later.
