It will probably take a while for Barcelona players to get over their Champions League exit last season.

In the semi-finals, Barca beat Liverpool 3-0 at the Camp Nou and looked to be heading to the final in Madrid.

That was until a quite incredible second leg at Anfield.

The Catalans collapsed, eventually losing 4-0 meaning their European Cup drought continued for a fourth year.

The fallout was, as you’d expect, quite remarkable.

Lionel Messi broke down in tears in the dressing room and was then selected for a random drugs test by anti-doping officials. It meant the team coach left the stadium without him leaving Messi having to deal with angry Barca fans when he arrived at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Barcelona’s president, Josep Bartomeu, described the defeat as a “disastrous night” for the club, while Luis Suarez later admitted that he didn’t want to leave the house following their devastating defeat.

And they haven’t quite recovered from that night.

A couple of weeks later, they lost the Copa del Rey final to Valencia.

They haven’t exactly started this season very well, either.

A loss to Athletic Bilbao in their opening fixture kicked things off before a 5-2 win against Real Betis. They then drew 2-2 with Osasuna before another 5-2 victory against Valencia.

But on Saturday night, they lost 2-0 to newly-promoted Granada.

It means Barca have now failed to win seven away matches in a row for the first time since 2001.

After seven points from their opening five matches, it’s also their worst start to a La Liga season since 1994/95.

Liverpool fans are taking credit for that. Following Barcelona’s embarrassing loss to Granada, they’re now claiming that Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi have officially broken Barcelona.

Check out the reaction:

It will certainly be interesting to see how Barca bounce back from their dismal start - and whether Ernesto Valverde will get the time to turn things around...
