It has been reported by Bad Left Hook, as per The Sun, that Bulgarian boxer Boris Stanchov, who unfortunately died in the ring after suffering a cardiac arrest during a fight against Ardit Murja, had been using his cousin's name and medical record for the past year.

Initial reports suggested that Stanchov's cousin, Isus Velichkov, was the one who passed away. However, it was later revealed, after Velichkov stepped forward, that it was actually Stanchov who had died under his cousin's identity.

The World Boxing Council had even released a statement on its website, paying tribute to Velichkov, before it was revealed that it was in fact Stanchov who had passed away.

"The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaiman, lament the death of 21-year-old Bulgarian fighter Isus Velichkov.

"Although the ring doctors did their best to save his life, the death was almost immediate.

"The entire WBC joins Velichkov's family at this very sad time, in deepest sorrow."

In the fifth round of his fight with Murja in Albania, Stanchov was struck with a jab. He immediately became wobbly on his feet before hitting the canvas just moments later.

When it became apparent that something had gone horribly wrong, the fight was waved off and medical personnel rushed into the ring.

Albanian TV channel Klan reported that Stanchov had "suffered a cardiac arrest" and that despite being taken to the local hospital, he could not be revived.

Speaking to reporters in Bulgaria, Velichkov said: "He has been playing with my card since 2018. He said no problem, the coach knows."

It's been suggested that Stanchov was fighting under the name of his cousin because he didn't want to have any losses to his name.

The Board of Directors of the Bulgarian Professional Boxing Union have now set up a meeting to work out how the names and documents of Stanchov were changed without anyone noticing.

Hopefully something can and will be done to prevent this horrible accident from happening again.
