The footballing world is understandably baffled by FIFA's latest official World XI.

By some miracle, Real Madrid defensive pair Sergio Ramos and Marcelo made the cut, despite both enduring arguably their worst seasons for Los Blancos.

Marcelo was dropped for large parts of the 2018/19 campaign due to his poor form, while Ramos was a constant figure in a defence which leaked goal after goal in La Liga.

Essentially, the duo's seasons were the polar opposite to Liverpool's dynamic defensive pairing of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson.

Jurgen Klopp's flying full-backs assisted for fun and helped the Reds keep a plethora of clean sheets in both the Premier League and Champions League.

But neither were good enough for FIFA's XI, which has left Liverpool fans - and even neutral ones - totally bemused.

And Steven Gerrard has now made his feelings on the matter very clear with his latest Instagram post.

The Liverpool legend posted a photo each of Alexander-Arnold and Robertson, which a simple caption of: "We know so it doesn’t matter #🌍👏👏."

GERRARD SPEAKS OUT ON INSTAGRAM

Well said, Steven.

There has long been questions about the selection of players for the FIFA World XI, but this year's edition appears to have received more scrutiny than ever.

Ramos, Marcelo and Luka Modric are three of the most laughable recipients of the honour arguably in the award's history.

Had it been 12 months ago, their inclusions would have been justified entirely.

But players cannot simply be picked based on their reputation, which is what seems to have happened this time around.

The fact no Manchester City players were rewarded for winning a domestic treble says it all.

Surely the voting system needs to be changed in order for future XIs to regain credibility?
