Tottenham have suffered a shock defeat in the third round of the Carabao Cup, losing 4-3 on penalties to League Two side Colchester United.

The game finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and went straight to spot-kicks.

Incredibly, Christian Eriksen missed the first penalty, before Luke Norris gave the hosts the advantage.

Dele Alli then scored his to pull things back, before Colchester went 2-1 up. Erik Lamela netted before Jevani Brown tried and failed to score a Panenka.

Son Heung-min scored before Lucas Moura missed for the Premier League side, as Tom Lapslie scored the decider, finishing the shootout 4-3.

It's the second defeat in four days for Spurs, but this one is far more embarrassing than Saturday's result at Leicester.

Mauricio Pochettino did shuffle his pack, but the team still had a good balance of youth and experience.

The likes of Alli, Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama all started, while youngsters Troy Parrott, Oliver Skipp and Japhet Tanganga also featured from kick-off.

Yet, remarkably, the north London side were held on the road in the Carabao Cup. Kyle Walker-Peters came closet, hitting the post.

But Colchester held strong and forced a shootout, before pulling off one of the most shocking results of the season so far.

It's not just been a bad couple of days for Spurs - the month of September has been one to forget.

It began with a north London derby against Arsenal, a game that Pochettino's side led 2-0 before being pegged back, dropping two points in a draw.

A few weeks later, another 2-0 lead was thrown away, this time in the Champions League against Olympiacos.

The defeat to Leicester followed three days later and on Tuesday night, a Carabao Cup defeat to League Two Colchester.

With a European tie against Bayern Munich just seven days away, Spurs could be in a spot of trouble.
