The proverbial has well and truly hit the fan for Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs had already finished last season on a difficult run of form, only masked by their charge to the Champions League final, and they seemed to have picked up from where they left off.

Defeats to Newcastle United and Leicester City as well as bottling a 2-0 lead against Arsenal has left Tottenham with just two Premier League wins, dropping them down into seventh place.

Their return to Champions League action looked to offer respite but, in the spirit of their recent north London derby, Spurs surrendered a 2-0 advantage during their opener at Olympiacos.

However, the nadir of Tottenham's already tumultuous season came on Tuesday night and in arguably the competition that it would be easiest for them to win.

Colchester knock out Spurs

It's been well publicised how Mauricio Pochettino has won zero trophies at Spurs across five years and Carabao Cup progression seemed guaranteed against Colchester United.

But this is Spurs we're talking about. Despite facing mere League Two opposition, they couldn't make a breakthrough in 90 minutes and the game went to a penalty shootout at 0-0.

And although Jevani Brown saw his effort saved for the home side, misses from Christian Eriksen and Lucas Moura ensured that Colchester progressed to the fourth round.

As a result, plenty of Spurs fans had finally lost their patience with such a disastrous start to the season and proceeded to take their anger out on Twitter.

The target of their frustrations? None other than Pochettino himself, who seems to have plummeted from 'one of the world's best managers' to the fall guy for Tottenham's recent plight.

It wasn't just a minority of Tottenham fans either because the hashtag 'PochOut' even started trending on Twitter last night, suggesting that supporters even want the Argentine sacked.

  • "Thanks for the memories but it’s time to f**k off. #pochout."
  • "10 points dropped out of a possible 18. Clearly the players don't care for Poch anymore. Time to move on. #PochOut."
  • "I love you gaffer, but enough is enough, time to go. #PochOut."

Meanwhile, there was even a passionate group of fans that not only wanted Pochettino sacked but were campaigning for Jose Mourinho to replace him.

You can understand the frustration at a lack of trophies and such a poor start to the season, but it's incredibly early days to be calling for Pochettino's head.

It's hard to imagine which manager could do a better job, in the long term at least, and Pochettino has proven himself to be one of the world's best on a consistent basis.

All isn't right at Tottenham, but they shouldn't cut their nose off to spite their face.
