The end of an era in MMA is almost upon us.

After 10 years in the sport, Daniel Cormier is finally ready to call it quits at the age of 40 years of age - but not before he's had one last fight.

Cormier originally wanted to retire before his 40th birthday, and a super-fight with Brock Lesnar had been lined up after their slanging match at UFC 226 in 2018.

But after that failed to materialise and Lesnar re-signed with WWE, Cormier defended his title against former champion Stipe Miocic - and was put down in the fourth round of the fight and stopped via TKO.

It must have been a sore one to take, but Cormier wants his title back, however he won't be defending it if he does manage to regain it.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani's MMA Show on Monday, the former freestyle wrestler confirmed that should all parties agree to the terms, a Miocic trilogy fight will be his definitive last, and a date has already seemingly been discussed.

"Win or lose, I’m not fighting again,” said Cormier, per MMA Mania.

“This will be the only time I ever step foot inside the Octagon again. Next one is the last one, but it has to be Stipe, no one else matters. [UFC] wants me to fight Stipe again, it was a fantastic fight.

“If December 14 becomes available, that would work for me.

“I’d be happy to get myself ready to do that. I love to compete and I don’t want to finish like this. If he’s still good enough to beat me under those terms, then it is what it is.”

The fact Cormier will only fight Miocic now means that a third and final clash with long-term rival Jon Jones is now off the table.

Jones has refused to move up to heavyweight whilst he still holds the light heavyweight championship, and previously told DC to come back down to the 205-pound division if he wants to face him.

We will soon see one of the greatest MMA fighters ever bow out of the game, and it would be so fitting if he retired a champion.
