Lionel Messi said to Barcelona physio ‘I can’t be injured, I can’t be injured’ v Villarreal

Lionel Messi had to go off at half-time during Barcelona's 2-1 win vs Villarreal

Lionel Messi is enduring his worst ever start to a season with Barcelona.

The Argentine legend picked up a calf injury in pre-season, meaning he only made his first start of the season last night at home to Villarreal - which Barca won 2-1.

But despite recording an assist for Antoine Griezmann's opening goal, Messi's nightmare start to the campaign continued.

He was replaced at half-time by Ousmane Dembele after spending a portion of the first-half on the sidelines nursing what appeared to be an issue with his left adductor.

It was another setback for Barca's talisman and his remarks to the club's physio on the sideline highlights his frustration right now.

As picked up by El Golazo de Gol's cameras, per Marca, Messi could be seen saying "I cannot break, I cannot break".

The 32-year-old was pleading with his body to not pick up another significant injury.

Barca are currently in the midst of a crisis and they need their main man back fit and healthy if they are to break out of their current funk anytime soon.

Ernesto Valverde is still waiting on results to hear the extent of Messi's latest injury, but the hope is that he was taken off merely as a precaution.

Messi receives treatment on the sideline

If he is ruled out for a significant period of time, the Barca boss can at least call upon the rest of his big hitters now.

Luis Suarez, Griezmann and Dembele are all back to full fitness, while the exciting Ansu Fati continues to dazzle whenever called upon.

But sadly, none of that quartet can replicate Messi's output, no matter how hard they try.
