Manchester United survived a huge scare in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday night as they scraped past League One side Rochdale on penalties.

Mason Greenwood's 68th-minute opener was cancelled out by 16-year-old Luke Matheson eight minutes later and try as they might, United couldn't find a winner.

Ole Gunnar Solskaer's side might have even found themselves 1-0 down just after half-time had it not been for the acrobatics of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

When Oliver Rathbone crossed for Callum Camps and Sergio Romero was in no man's land, United's goal was wide open.

But Wan-Bissaka managed to recover to produce an outstanding goal-line clearance and keep the scores level.

On the whole it was a hugely disappointing performance from United, whose starting line-up featured senior players like Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones.

If he wasn't already, Solskjaer is facing a race against time to solve his side's problems otherwise he could face the sack at the Theatre of Dreams.

He was rescued by Daniel James, who stepped up to score the winning penalty, and Romero, who saved Rochdale's second from Jimmy Keohane.

Romero produced a save when it mattered most and he used some pretty hilarious tactics to try and put off Keohane.

In the video below, the Argentine puts on a big smile and raises his eyebrows just as Keohane is about to start his run up.

What a madman.

Next up for United in the Carabao Cup fourth round is a trip to Chelsea, who will be looking to avenge the 4-0 defeat on the opening weekend of the Premier League.

United haven't looked the same since that thumping victory, whereas Chelsea have massively improved under Frank Lampard. It should be a very interesting tie.
