What were you doing at 16-years-old?Whatever it was, it probably wasn’t quite as memorable as scoring against Manchester United at Old Trafford. But that’s what happened to Rochdale’s Luke Matheson last night. The League One side were trailing 1-0 in their Carabao Cup third-round tie. That was until Matheson popped up with an equaliser with just minutes remaining.

Incredible.

Dale may have gone on to lose the match on penalties but it’s a story that Matheson will be telling for the rest of his life.

But the youngster couldn’t celebrate last night.

Of course, he still has to wait two years to able to legally drink alcohol but he also has school today.

In fact, he’s got a psychology test on Thursday morning.

"I would have been at school today,” Matheson revealed after the game.

“I am going in tomorrow to make up for it when we have day off as I have a psychology test. I can't wait for that. I don't think I will sleep tonight.

"Rochdale and the school have been so supportive of me. I love learning; it is what I want to do.

Football is not a guarantee. You never know what will happen. You could be the best player in the world but anything is possible. I want to have that back-up plan just in case.

Very sensible for Matheson.

Last month, he was collecting his GCSE results and last night he was scoring against one of the biggest clubs in world football.

At the Trinity C of E High School, he picked up a grade 8 in P.E and a 9 in history - the highest level under the new grading system.

He also got 8s in Chemistry, Physics and R.E, 7s in English Language, Maths and Biology, a 6 in Spanish and a 5 in English literature.

That is one very talented 16-year-old - both educationally and on the football pitch.
