After nearly eight years away from WWE, John Morrison is returning to the company.

According to PW Insider, Morrison has penned a deal but it's unknown whether his destination will be the main roster or NXT.

His initial in-ring run with WWE, then named Johnny Nitro, saw him as part of the tag team MNM with Joey Mercury, managed by Melina, and the pair won the WWE Tag Team Championships three times.

He then transitioned into a singles star, winning both the ECW and Intercontinental Championship, and in 2007 he was re-christened 'John Morrison'.

Morrison also had a successful partnership with The Miz between 2007 and 2009, which led to them being given their own web show which was dubbed 'The Dirt Sheet', but after that team ended he returned to singles competition, before departing WWE in 2011.

The 39-year-old has been all around the independent scene since and has also had a successful run in Lucha Underground as 'Johnny Mundo'.

Most recently he has been performing in IMPACT Wrestling as 'Johnny Impact', but he's returning to his wrestling home - and you can imagine it won't be long before he's back on television in some capacity.

Where he ends up though is a mystery, as there's now three brands where he could slot into.

There's no reason why he couldn't go back onto Raw or SmackDown immediately and make an impact - he could even team back up with The Miz who hasn't been doing much of late.

But with NXT going up against AEW starting from this Wednesday, the brand could maybe use a little bit more star power to go up against the likes of Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley.

Morrison also brings interest from the IMPACT, Lucha Libre AAA and Lucha Underground fans who will have seen him more recently.

He's been handed the top title in all of these promotions in the last five years, so Morrison is clearly doing something right, and Vince McMahon is finally bringing him back into the fold.
