Manchester United vs Arsenal is a fixture steeped in history.

The two sides have met 231 times in total, with Man United having the upper hand in their head-to-head meetings.

The Red Devils have won 97 times compared to Arsenal's 83 victories, while there have also been 51 draws.

The two sides meet for the 232nd time on Monday and Man United will be hoping to do what they did to Arsenal back in August 2011.

Arsenal had endured an extremely poor start to the 2011/2012 Premier League season.

After a 0-0 draw against Newcastle on the opening day, they lost 2-0 to Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium a week later.

And then they suffered one of the worst days in their history as they were destroyed 8-2 by Man United at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side managed to smash EIGHT goals past a hapless Arsenal side on the day.

Wayne Rooney netted a hat-trick and Ashley Young bagged a brace, while Danny Welbeck, Nani and Park Ji-Sung all got on the scoresheet.

It was a truly miserable day for Arsenal, who finished the game with 10-men after Carl Jenkinson was given a late red card.

So, ahead of their 232nd meeting on Monday night, what happened to the Arsenal side that were embarrassed by Man United eight years ago?

GK: Wojciech Szczesny

Szczesny's career has gone from strength-to-strength.

The Polish goalkeeper made 181 appearances for Arsenal before spending two seasons on loan at Roma.

After excelling in the Italian capital, he joined Juventus in 2017 and has since emerged into one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

DF: Carl Jenkinson

Jenkinson's second appearance for Arsenal was an eventful one. He set up Robin Van Persie's goal but was also sent off in the 77th minute.

He was just 19 at the time and was viewed as one of the club's best prospects. However, he failed to live up to his potential.

The Charlton youth product made just 70 appearances for the Gunners over eight years and finally left the club for Nottingham Forest this summer.

DF: Johan Djourou

Djourou never really made the grade at Arsenal.

The Swiss defender finally left the Gunners in 2014 after 11 years with the club.

He joined German outfit Hamburg, where he played for three seasons.

The 32-year-old is currently a free agent after unsuccessful spells with Antalyaspor and Italian club SPAL.

DF: Laurent Koscielny

The French defender was well thought of by Arsenal fans until this summer.

After nine seasons with the club, Koscielny decided to force through a move away from the club and eventually moved back to France with Bordeaux.

DF: Armand Traore

With all due respect, a defence consisting of Jenkinson, Djourou and Traore was never going to go well at Old Trafford.

Arsene Wenger clearly wasn't impressed with Traore's showing against Man United as he was sold to QPR just two days later.

He spent five seasons with The Rs before joining Nottingham Forest in 2018.

Now 29, he's currently a free agent after an unsuccessful spell in Turkey with Çaykur Rizespor.

MF: Aaron Ramsey

Ramsey will always be well thought of at Arsenal.

The Welshman joined the Gunners as a 17-year-old and went on to play 369 times for the club.

His 11-year stint came to an end this summer when he joined Juventus on a free transfer.

MF: Francis Coquelin

Coquelin's Premier League debut for Arsenal did not go well.

He became more of a regular for Arsenal in the years after but left the club in 2018 after making 160 appearances.

He's now a regular for Valencia.

MF: Tomas Rosicky

Rosicky was a talented player who's time at the club was unfortunately tainted by injury.

He made 247 appearances across 10 seasons at the club before leaving for Sparta Prague in 2016.

He retired with his boyhood club a year later.

MF: Theo Walcott

Walcott joined Arsenal as a 16-year-old and went on to score 108 times in 397 games for the club.

He finally left for Everton in 2018.

MF: Andrey Arshavin

A talented player on his day, Arshavin spent five seasons at Arsenal before leaving for Zenit in 2013.

He moved to Kuban Krasnodar two years later before retiring last year at Kazakhstan Premier League side, FC Kairat.

ST: Robin Van Persie

Van Persie broke Arsenal fans' hearts when he decided to leave for Man United in 2012.

He joined Fenerbahce after three seasons with the Red Devils, before retiring earlier this summer with his boyhood club, FC Feyenoord.

SUB: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Oxlade-Chamberlain ended his seven-year stint with Arsenal in 2017 when he joined Liverpool for £35 million.

SUB: Marouane Chamakh

Chamakh failed in his three-season spell with Arsenal. He left for West Ham and went on to play for Crystal Palace and Cardiff.

He retired in May 2019 having been without a club for two-and-a-half years.

SUB: Henri Lansbury

Lansbury made just three Premier League appearances for Arsenal. He left for Nottingham Forest in 2012 and is now back in the English top tier with Aston Villa.

MANAGER: Arsene Wenger

Wenger's 22-year spell with Arsenal came to an end in 2018.

He's currently doing punditry for the likes of BeIN Sports but has iterated his desire to get back into management.
