Manchester City were made to work hard for their 3-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday evening.

Pep Guardiola named Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and David Silva on the bench, with one eye on Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Dinamo Zagreb.

Gabriel Jesus broke the deadlock for City midway through the first half but the two teams went into half-time level after Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled the scores.

With the scores still level after 66 minutes, Guardiola threw on Aguero in place of Jesus.

But it was Riyad Mahrez who made it 2-1 shortly afterwards with a free-kick which Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford probably should have saved.

The two Silvas, Bernardo and David, then entered the fray in the closing stages as Raheem Sterling scored a late third for City.

It was almost 4-0 in stoppage-time following another mistake from Pickford.

England’s number one goalkeeper allowed the ball to bounce outside his box and was then robbed of possession by Bernardo Silva.

The Portuguese midfielder had an opportunity to dribble past Pickford but instead opted to cross the ball into the box.

Everton’s defenders cleared the danger but Pickford seemed to find the situation amusing, much to the fury of Sky Sports’ co-commentator Gary Neville.

The Manchester United legend couldn’t believe Pickford was laughing after making a mistake when his team were already 3-1 down.

“Why’s Jordan Pickford laughing?” Neville said.

“I don’t know why he finds it funny. It’s not funny.

“He should have saved the second goal and nearly cost his team a fourth.”

Don’t hold back, Gary. Tell us how you really feel!

In fairness, though, many football fans on social media were on Neville’s side on this one…
