Giovani dos Santos has had an unpredictable career, to say the least. For a player who less than a decade ago was named by Don Balon as one of the 100 best young talents in the world born after 1989, he’s fallen short of the heights many expected he would reach.Dos Santos made his senior debut for Barcelona in September 2007 before scoring a hat-trick on the final day of the La Liga season. It was a memorable way to bid farewell in what would prove to be his last appearance for the Catalonians.Dos Santos then joined Tottenham Hotspur for €6 million, though his time in London was forgettable.

The striker managed 12 goals during a four-year spell between 2008 and 2012, which included loans at Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and Racing Santander.

Perhaps to no surprise, then, dos Santos’ attitude was questioned by then Spurs manager Harry Redknapp.

The Mexican finally parted ways with Tottenham to join Mallorca in the summer of 2012.

He didn’t set the world alight during his first season back in Spain, but an ensuing switch to Villarreal brought out a more impressive version of him.

Dos Santos netted 17 times across two campaigns at El Madrigal, which despite being the best goalscoring form of his career, resulted in him signing for LA Galaxy come July 2015.

His four years in the United States were largely productive - he earned two MLS All-Star nominations - but the Californian outfit decided not to keep him beyond the end of the last campaign.

Now, dos Santos represents Club America in his native Mexico, where he’s scored once in seven matches.

Unfortunately, the 30-year-old probably won’t be adding to that tally anytime soon after he suffered a horrific injury against Guadalajara on Saturday.

Dos Santos had beaten opponent Antonio Briseno to a loose ball, yet in doing so, the defender’s challenge ending up catching him just above the knee.

But this was no slight knock; one of Briseno’s boot studs pierced dos Santos’ skin, leaving a nasty hole in his leg.

The culprit was sent off for the offence - and when you see the consequence of his rash challenge, it’s no surprise.

Ouch indeed.

Club America fear dos Santos may have suffered a fractured knee, but hopefully further assessment reveals better news for the injury-plagued striker.
