Ole Gunnar Solskjaer badly needed an overhaul of Manchester United's stuttering squad in the summer. Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Daniel James were the three much-needed arrivals, but the revolving doors were also swinging the other way. Romelu Lukaku and Matteo Darmian were sold, Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera both moved away on free transfers, while Chris Smalling, Alexis Sanchez, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Joel Pereira all went out on loan. Lukaku is averaging a goal every two games in with Inter Milan, where he's been joined by Sanchez. The Chilean's first start admittedly yielded mixed results, as he made it onto the scoresheet but then got sent off.

Smalling is also taking very well to Serie A after a disappointing debut defeat against Atalanta.

The centre-back joined Roma on a season-long loan and United fans will be keeping one eye on his progress.

The record deal for Maguire effectively confirmed there was no future for the England international at Old Trafford.

However, that could change if he impresses in the Italian capital.

Against Lecce, he earned Man of the Match with some seriously impressive statistics.

He won 100% of his aerial duels and tackles, while also making more ball recoveries, shots, headed clearances, interceptions, and blocks than any other player on the pitch.

Edin Dzeko scored the winner, but it was Smalling who deserved particular praise for his efforts.

Finally, after struggling in the Premier League for the last few years, he may have found a league where he's more at home.

It will take a remarkable turnaround for him to win Solskjaer over, nonetheless, especially as United now have Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe as options in his position.

Roma move up to fifth but remain seven points off the summit.
