Historically, Manchester United vs Arsenal is the biggest fixture in the Premier League.

The clash often used to decide titles. Now, it decides sixth place.

The most infamous battle came in February 2005.

Captains Roy Keane and Patrick Viera clashed in the tunnel before the match had even kicked-off prompting referee Graham Poll telling them to “leave it in here."

That didn’t quite happen during what was a fiery clash at Highbury as United ran out 4-2 winners.

Starring in that match was a 19-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo.

And he was at the centre of everything.

Early on, he squared up to Thierry Henry - an action that riled the home fans. It led to Ronaldo being booed for the rest of the match.

But that only served to inspire the Portuguese.

With Arsenal leading 2-1, Ronaldo scored twice in four second half minutes to turn the match around.

His celebration after those two goals? To shush the home fans.

Elite.

John O’Shea’s late goal gave United a 4-2 victory and handed Sir Alex Ferguson’s side a famous win.

Both sides were actually pipped to the title that season with Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea romping home to a comfortable triumph.

Fast forward 14 years, United and Arsenal certainly won’t be competing for the title again this season.

But there will no doubt be a competitive edge when the sides meet at Old Trafford this evening.

The fixture will just be lacking a player with the quality of Cristiano Ronaldo.
