Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and West Ham are just three of the nine Premier League sides to have more points than Manchester United through the first seven games of the season. It’s been a struggle for United supporters, who have witnessed some uninspiring performances under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The season started well enough. A 4-0 win against Chelsea on the opening day suggested good things were to come. But the Red Devils have managed just one win in the league since. There have been defeats against Palace and West Ham and draws with Wolves, Southampton and now Arsenal.

Monday evening’s 1-1 stalemate against the Gunners was a rather grim affair, devoid of much quality.

And it brought about a record that Solskjaer will not want attached to his name.

Worst-ever Premier League start

With nine points through the first seven games, United have made their worst start to a Premier League season.

Not good.

They have failed to reach double figures for the first time since the 1989/90 season, when they had seven points through seven games and finished 13th.

They’re already 12 points behind Liverpool.

How the mighty has fallen.

Scott McTominay’s goal at the end of the first half gave United the lead at Old Trafford but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalised just before the hour.

Neither side could force a winner and Solskjaer rued his side’s failure to add to their 1-0 lead afterwards.

The Norwegian coach said, per BBC Sport: “How many times have we have been 1-0 up and not got the second goal?

This is a steep learning curve for us and we'll keep working hard and, with more experience, we'll make the right decisions.

Solskjaer couldn’t put a foot wrong during his spell as United’s interim boss.

But that period seems like a long, long time ago now.

If he doesn’t put things right, he could be shown the door.
