There is no domestic competition in the footballing universe that can compare to the Champions League.Europe's premiere tournament pits the best players in the world against each other year in year out and the results just seem to be getting better. The sight of seeing the elite go toe-to-toe in breathtaking stadiums is what the game is all about and succeeding in the Champions League is the pinnacle for most footballers. And one man who has made success in the competition look like a walk in the park is Cristiano Ronaldo. The 34-year-old has made the most competitive tournament in the domestic game look effortlessly easy, amassing a record 126 goals in 163 Champions League games.

He also has five winners medals to his name, four with Real Madrid and one with Manchester United.

And it was on this day in 2003 that the Champions League's greatest ever player made his debut in the competition.

Sixteen years ago, a raw but talented Ronaldo started in United's 2-1 loss away at Stuttgart and the then 18-year-old played the full 90 minutes.

Another footballing icon also made his full Champions League debut in the same game in Phillipp Lahm, who was on loan from Bayern Munich.

Those two turned out okay, didn't they?

Ronaldo's Champions League bow didn't get off to the best possible start and amazingly, it actually took the Portuguese 26 games to score his first goal.

He finally netted in United's famous 7-1 win against Roma in April 2007 and since then, he hasn't looked back.

He scored in the 2008, 2014 and 2017 finals, plus he also notched an unprecedented 17 goals in the 2013/14 Champions League season, smashing Lionel Messi's record of 14 from 2011/12.

Ronaldo will also be looking to win the tournament with Juventus this season to become only the second player to win the Champions League with three different clubs.
