Arsenal were far from their best as they drew 1-1 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Monday night.

One man that has been criticised for his performance was Granit Xhaka.

The Switzerland star was named permanent captain in last week but struggled on the night.

His role in Scott McTominay's goal led to many people questioning Unai Emery's decision to make him captain.

Xhaka tugged Jesse Lingard down in the build-up and was then accused of ducking away from McTominay's effort.

While Xhaka struggled, his partner in midfield, Matteo Guendouzi, had a great game.

The Frenchman is only 20 years old but has shown maturity beyond his years and is popular among Arsenal fans.

And after the match Arsenal legend Ian Wright was full or praise for the youngster.

“If you are going to take any positives out of it then the form and the emergence of Matteo Guendouzi is fantastic," he said, per Goal.

“He’s somebody that is driving the team forward.

“When he came in, for his first season to play that many games, I thought it was too much, I thought it was too many.

“But now you’re seeing somebody that looks totally in control in what he’s doing.

“He’s getting himself into great spaces, against Tottenham he was fantastic, got the assist for Aubameyang.

“He’s somebody who is continuously driving forward and making sure that he is trying to help the team."

Wright then said that Guendouzi - not Xhaka - should have been given the armband.

“And, for me, I know they’ve chosen the captain but Xhaka should not be captain in front of this guy or Aubameyang, for me.

“He is leading by example for a 20-year-old. We know Tony Adams was a captain at 20, maybe Unai’s not strong enough to give somebody like Matteo Guendouzi [the captaincy].

“When you look at him here and what he’s doing, that is taking the game by the scruff of the neck and driving Arsenal forward, and he’s not been made captain or vice-captain.

“It’s crazy, for me.”

He would have been a much popular choice among Arsenal fans, that's for sure.

Piers Morgan also came out in support of Guendouzi when Emery's captaincy decision was made last week.

'I'd have made Guendouzi captain. He seems a more natural leader & more guaranteed his place in the team. Xhaka has a lot to prove," he wrote.
