Four seasons without reaching the Champions League final is something of a concern for a club like Barcelona.

Since their triumph in Berlin in 2015, the Blaugrana have gone four years without appearing in the big game.

The 2018/19 season was exceptionally painful. That 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield still hurts.

And it seems to have left a lasting impact on this Barcelona side.

Ernesto Valverde’s side haven’t played well in the opening weeks of the 2019/20 campaign, losing two of their first eight La Liga matches.

Lionel Messi’s lack of gametime hasn’t helped. The Argentinian has played just 122 minutes as a result of his injuries.

Yet it’s hard not to feel like this Barcelona side just isn’t equipped to deal with the best teams in Europe.

It’s a far cry from the days under Pep Guardiola. Barcelona between 2008-11 were ridiculously talented and can be considered among the very best teams in football history.

One man who witnessed Barcelona at their peak was Marco Materazzi, who was a part of the Inter Milan side that beat the Spanish giants 3-2 on aggregate to reach the final in 2010.

And Materazzi sees no reason for opponents to be fearful of Barcelona now, for they aren’t the team they once were.

“Barcelona are always strong, but they don't scare their opponents anymore," Materazzi said, per Marca.

"They're not the team of 2010, that will never come back.

"Now they have three or four phenomenons on the pitch.

Back then there were 10 and an alien named [Lionel] Messi.

Inter went on to win the competition in 2010 under Jose Mourinho, beating Bayern Munich in the final.

They managed to prevent Messi from scoring in four matches - two group games contests and the semi-final.

Yet Materazzi doesn’t have any advice on how to stop Barcelona’s No.10.

“It's impossible [to stop him]," he added.

"You have to hope he has a bad day."
