With the Wednesday Night Wars about to begin, it's perhaps fitting that one of the most important wrestling stars of the 21st century is in the news once again.

That's right, the name of CM Punk has entered the wrestling rumour mill once again, and he's made some rather surprising comments this week.

Punk appeared on a Los Angeles radio show yesterday morning, and commented on the speculation that he may be linking up with FOX and WWE to appear in the weekly analysis show 'WWE Backstage', which premieres next month.

Despite PW Insider reporting that he was in LA recently at FOX Studios to do some on-camera testing for the show, Punk joked with The Kevin & Bean Show, per Wrestling Inc, about people wanting to see him analyse WWE action instead of him wrestling.

He never denied the rumours, but Punk didn't confirm them either, but you'd have to think that if he did take up a role on WWE Backstage, then a return to the ring would be just around the corner.

Punk also told fans to 'not be mad at him' if a return to WWE or wrestling in general never comes, but yet again he didn't close the door on a comeback.

The former WWE Champion hasn't wrestled in nearly six years, but the rumours of him linking up with FOX has excited fans around the world.

According to a tweet from WrestleVotes though, don't expect an in-ring return to come anytime soon.

The reputable Twitter account has stated that even though they've heard nothing definitive, one of their sources said on Punk's return: 'Probably not now, but eventually'.

It all depends on whether or not he has the passion to return to the business, but WWE creatively is in a bit of a different position as opposed to when he left in 2014.

Punk's good friend Paul Heyman holds significant creative power on Monday Night Raw nowadays, and that could tempt him to lace up the boots once more.

But hold fire on any excitement just now - if he appears on WWE Backstage, then we can get excited.
