Manchester United's dreadful form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued on Thursday night as they drew 0-0 to AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League.

Now 10 away games without a win, the Red Devils struggled to create any goalscoring opportunities and didn't find the target once.

And yet, Solskjaer said he was "very happy" with his players: "We come away with a good performance. Good performance against a good opponent on a very bad surface.

"If you get your draws away from home and win your home games you'll be fine. We go to Belgrade wanting a win and that sets you up nicely."

Standards have certainly dropped at United over the past few years and there are concerns about how well they're going to do in the Premier League this season.

Solskjaer's side are currently 10th in the table after seven games having only won twice - both at home.

Something needs to change if United are going to enjoy any success, but Michael Owen believes the damage has already been done.

Speaking on BT Sport after Thursday's game, Owen conceded that United are now a mid-table team and probably won't finish in the Premier League top six.

"I'd say (Man United are now a mid-table team)," the former striker said. "I don't think they'll be top six this season, personally.

"Top half I think is likely, but just the fact we're having this conversation is the worry, isn't it? This has got to be the worst Man United team for decades, since before Sir Alex Ferguson took over.

It's been happening for a few years. For maybe five, six, seven, eight years you've been thinking 'it can't get any worse' - and it has.

The idea of United finishing outside of the top six having only won the Premier League title six years ago seems unthinkable, but it's very possible.

They've declined massively under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and now Solskjaer, who seems to be running out of ideas.

Signing new players in the upcoming transfer windows is an absolute must, but it's not as if United haven't already been spending money on world-class talent in recent years.

For whatever reason, they're just not improving.

Owen added that he believes Solskjaer is trying to start from scratch by getting rid of players like Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera, yet it's also possible that he won't be given enough time.

Dark times indeed.
