Posh penalties punish Saints

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson saw his side twice fight back from two-down to draw 4-4 with Southampton, but was gutted not to win an outstanding game.

Ferguson felt both penalties awarded to the Saints at London Road were questionable, although he insisted the two given to his side by referee Eddie Ilderton were justified. Lee Tomlin converted the last of the spot-kicks deep into stoppage time to ensure honours ended even.

"I thought my players were absolutely magnificent. A lot of teams would have gone under at 2-0 against Southampton, let alone at 4-2," said Ferguson.

"We have a terrific bunch of honest lads who never know when they are beaten. We came from behind to beat Sheffield Wednesday down here in midweek and we fought back twice to draw today.

"I actually feel we deserve to win the game because I thought both of the penalties Southampton received were dubious whereas the two we got were both blatant spot-kicks.

"You can ask any manager and they will tell you how difficult it is to find top-class defenders and it might just be the case that we have to rely on out-scoring teams."
