Manchester United’s season went from bad to worse on Sunday evening as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park.

The Red Devils now find themselves 12th in the Premier League table, just two points outside the relegation zone, after eight matches.

A second-half strike from 19-year-old debutant Matty Longstaff earned all three points for Steve Bruce’s side and the result piles further pressure on the under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Scoring goals has been one of many issues for the Red Devils so far this season.

Following the 4-0 win over Chelsea on the opening weekend of the season - which increasingly feels like a freak result - Man Utd have only managed to score five goals in their next seven matches.

It doesn’t help that United are worryingly short on attacking options.

Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial are the club’s only first-team strikers after Solskjaer allowed both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to join Inter Milan.

Solskjaer told Sky Sports over the weekend that he doesn’t regret his decision to allow Lukaku to leave Old Trafford, saying the Belgian forward’s “time was up” in Manchester.

"When you have players, [they may have] great potential, but Romelu's head was not here for us working forward as a group,” the Norwegian coach said.

"I don't want to speak too much about other players. I have got lots of respects for Romelu but his time was up here.”

Lukaku, however, has already scored three goals in six Serie A appearances for Inter.

And just hours after United slumped to an embarrassing defeat against Newcastle, the 26-year-old was busy embarrassing Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt.

Midway through the first half, Lukaku received the ball, held off one opponent and then broke the press with a brilliant nutmeg on the defender considered by many as football’s next great centre-back.

Not bad at all from Big Rom.

His final ball wasn’t the best - naturally - although his strike partner Lautaro Martinez still managed to force Wojciech Szczesny into a save.

Unfortunately for Lukaku, though, it was De Ligt and his Juve teammates who ended up having the last laugh.

An 80th-minute winner from Gonzalo Higuain sealed all three points for the Old Lady, who move above Inter into pole position at the top of the Serie A table.
