The weekend just gone might well be a pivotal one in this season’s Premier League title race.Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Wolves was their first league loss without scoring at the Etihad since March 2016.The shock result has opened up an eight-point gap between the champions and Liverpool, who maintained their flawless start to the campaign on Saturday afternoon. The Reds snatched a 2-1 win against Leicester at Anfield after James Madison cancelled out Sadio Mane’s opener with ten minutes left to play.Liverpool’s Senegal international won a 95th-minute penalty which was duly dispatched by James Milner to give Jurgen Klopp’s men their eighth consecutive Premier League win.

Naturally, Mane was the centre of attention after the final whistle.

Brandan Rodgers said, per BBC Sport: “[The foul leading to the penalty] did not look clear and obvious to me.

“We are bitterly disappointed to concede the penalty.

“Sadio Mane made the most of the contact. I don't think if it had not been given by the referee it would have been overturned by VAR. When the referee gives decisions it is hard for them to overrule it,” the former Liverpool boss added.

That particular controversy makes no difference to the fact that Mane was the star of the show, though.

His cool finish to put Liverpool ahead after 40 minutes was impressive in itself, but the lead-up play made it magnificent.

The move starts with Adrian bowling the ball to Dejan Lovren inside his penalty area, and then a couple of one-twos quickens the pace before Milner releases Mane in behind with a perfectly weighted through pass.

Better yet, it’s all been captured in a video showing what the goal looked like from the stands.

What a superb move.

It sums up the direct approach that makes Klopp’s team so good to watch.

There are still 30 matches remaining, but Liverpool certainly look like a confident bunch.
