Manchester United players ranked after awful start to 2019/20 season

Everybody thought Manchester United would probably struggle a bit when the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, but nobody could have envisaged quite how far the Premier League giants would fall over the next six years.

The Red Devils have hired and fired three different managers during that time - with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all failing at Old Trafford - and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is now in serious danger of becoming the fourth coach to add his name to that list.

United are 12th in the Premier League table after eight matches and sit just two points outside the relegation zone. That is obviously unacceptable and reports in some of Britain’s newspapers this week claim Solskjaer is now fighting for his job, just seven months after becoming the club’s permanent manager.

United’s next match is against their fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer described this as the “perfect” next game for his players but that comment may come back to haunt him a week on Sunday.

Liverpool have won all eight of their league games this season, scoring 20 goals and conceding just six.

United, on the other hand, have only sealed two victories from their opening eight matches, scoring just nine goals and conceding eight.

It’s time for the players to step up and prove that they deserve to play for Man Utd, whose match-going fans have stuck by them through thick and thin.

Another lacklustre performance against Liverpool, however, could well be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.

But the fact of the matter is, United do lack quality and depth in their squad. Fans expected a complete overhaul in the summer after a dismal end to the 2018/19 campaign but it never happened.

Only three players were brought in - Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James - while a lot of the deadwood remains.
